Over the past few years, I have noticed how ‘self-love’ or ‘self-care’ has become a trendy topic.
Magazine articles, blog posts, Youtube videos, TV shows have endlessly started to share various tips on self-love and self-care. As much as the intent of all that content is amazing, some of the tips were more ‘harmful’ than beneficial to your self-love.
One big misconception that I would like to address today is - Self-love/ self-care is doing something that feels good to you.
There is some truth to that, however, I would call it more as a ‘treat’ or in some cases a ’guilty pleasure’ more than a ‘self-love’ practice. Self-love is NOT always drinking wine and reading a gossip magazine or buying yourself an expensive handbag or a sugary dessert. A lot of the times self-love or self-care is doing the things that might NOT feel good or comfortable at the moment, but it is the very thing you need to do for your ultimate good.
It’s the choices that we make on daily basis, like choosing the more nutritious meal versus a naughty delicious one. Listening to a paragraph of an audiobook instead of watching a series of the newest TV show, choosing to go to the gym instead of sitting at home in front of the TV, choosing to meet your one best friend instead of meeting 10 people you have absolutely nothing to talk about and the list goes on and on. It’s about choosing what feeds and nurtures your body, mind, and soul and it might not always be the thing that you are super excited to do.
Self-love is fully accepting the things about yourself that you can't change and changing the things that you can not accept.
Self-love/ self-care is not a weekly ‘treat’ but a daily practice putting the health of your body, mind, and soul first. Listening and understanding your needs and spending some time with things and people that inspire, recharge, and fulfil you.
I absolutely believe in ’treat’ days or ‘guilty pleasures’ and it’s important to recognise the difference between them and self-love practices and balance them accordingly.
Self-love is giving the world what’s the best of you, not what's left of you! The energy you consume on daily basis is the very energy you will spread to the world!
Time to raise that vibe ladies, let’s get uncomfortable!
